El Colorado pairs with the Farellones base village to form a single ski area with the most varied terrain in the Tres Valles. Wide intermediate cruisers, well-pitched racing trails and quiet powder stashes off the back side, with a base that actually has restaurants and life. The easiest day-trip access from Santiago and the best 'all-rounder' of the four central Chilean resorts.

  • 22 lifts, 101 marked runs
  • Linked to Farellones, the only proper village in the Tres Valles
  • Strong intermediate and freestyle terrain
  • 45 minutes from Santiago city limits
(First-hand take)

After five seasons here.

If Valle Nevado is the international face of Chilean skiing and La Parva is the local favourite, El Colorado sits comfortably in between. Many travellers underestimate it before they arrive, spend a day there, and realise it's the most well-rounded of the three.

Who this is for
  • +Day-trippers from Santiago who want easy logistics
  • +Intermediate riders who want the most run variety in central Chile
  • +Freestyle and park skiers and snowboarders
  • +Travellers who want a real base village without leaving the Tres Valles
Who should skip it
  • ,Travellers chasing extreme terrain, head to La Parva or Valle Nevado
  • ,Anyone who wants a single quiet base, Farellones is busy on weekends
  • ,Riders who insist on slopeside luxury, that's Valle Nevado, not Farellones
(Three perspectives)

Skiers, snowboarders, and mountain-oriented travellers see this place differently.

For skiers

Strong all-mountain variety from beginner to advanced, well-pitched racing trails and quiet powder stashes off the back side. The best 'I can ski everything in one place' resort in central Chile.

For snowboarders

The park and freestyle scene is the most developed in Chile, the cruisers are board-friendly, and the village base means you can actually walk somewhere after riding.

For touring & backcountry

Less heli-focused than Valle Nevado, but the back side of El Colorado opens straightforward touring options with the right guide.

(Compare with)

South America ski trips rarely involve just one resort.

(Common mistakes)

What I see people get wrong.

  • 01Skiing weekends without expecting the road and the lifts to back up.
  • 02Skipping La Parva and Valle Nevado when the inter-connect makes them easy.
  • 03Driving up on Saturday morning. Don't.
  • 04Day-tripping every day from Santiago when 3 nights in Farellones would change the trip.
(If I were planning this trip again)

Three or four nights in Farellones, the inter-connect ticket, and weekday skiing wherever possible. I'd day-trip from Santiago only if budget is the priority, staying in the village changes the trip. On weekends I'd ski El Colorado early and shift toward La Parva or the Valle Nevado side by mid-morning to escape the local crowds.

The planning brief

Everything you need to decide if this resort fits your trip.

How to get there

From Santiago (SCL), ~1h 30m by road. Closest of the four Tres Valles resorts to the city.

Where to stay

Farellones village if you want walkable evenings and base-village life; day-trip from Santiago if budget is the priority.

Should you rent a car?

Useful if you'll combine with wine valleys or Valparaíso. For ski-only trips, transfers work better, the weekend road is rough.

Skill suitability

Strong across beginner, intermediate and advanced. Park riders are particularly well-served.

Powder strategy

Head to the back side off the upper chairs early, quieter than the front. Weekends bring crowds from Santiago.

Food and après

Farellones has the best restaurant variety of the Tres Valles. Lower-key than Bariloche but the most lively après on the Chilean side.

Family suitability

Strong. Variety of terrain, ski school, and a walkable village.

Lift tickets and passes

Day, multi-day and Tres Valles inter-connect. Confirm Ikon coverage by season.

Common planning mistakes

Skiing weekends without expecting crowds; skipping the inter-connect.

When El Colorado is the right call
